Your Coach Austan
Thanks for reading my bio and learning more about my journey. To best understand the concept behind Studio FITRX, I'd like to tell you a bit about myself, what I offer and how Studio FITRx came to be.
I’ve had the pleasure of having a long and amazing career in fitness. I started out as a fitness trainer almost 18 years ago and have had the privilege of helping people change their lives ever since.
As a young woman, fitness was a natural fit for me. I grew up as a dancer so I loved human movement. After landing a job at a gym, I quickly became certified in anything and everything fitness related. I loved teaching group fitness classes, spinning classes and anything that allowed me to combine music and movement together. I became fascinated with exercise and continued my education in the field of kinesiology with the plans of becoming a physiotherapist.
Shortly after I started working at the gym, my fitness classes were packed and my client list was longer than I could handle. I was so lucky to have an incredibly loyal group of clients, many of whom stayed with me for 10, 15+ years straight! As my career accelerated, I was consistently promoted into more supervisory/managerial roles and eventually into a more executive role and trainer education role. With the increasing demands of my growing career, I eventually decided that physiotherapy was no longer my goal so I left school to focus my efforts on furthering my executive opportunities (in hind site, dumb move….stay in school kids).
Eventually life went on. I married my high-school sweetheart (cliche, I know), we bought a house, did the adulting thing for awhile and then decided to start a family. After the birth of my first son in 2012, I felt a tremendous pressure to “bounce back” into pre-baby shape which created slew of unhealthy behaviours. It started with an obsessive and controlling relationship with food including calorie counting and macro counting. This led to obsessive exercising or punishing myself by restricting foods or trying to “work off” any indulgences. This obsession with perfection bled into all aspects of my life as I struggled to try to be the perfect mom, a top performing executive, a good boss, a fabulous fitness coach and more. I was sick, tired and stressed out.
Studio FITRx started out with just a small (but mighty) group of women who joined me for some cycling classes that eventually led to some ladies only group fitness classes. Once word got out about the amazing results that clients were achieving, Studio FITRx quickly manifested into a Super Squad sisterhood of women from all over the area and abroad. We’ve had incredible women joining our team from all over the world.
This little passion project has grown into a magical movement that I am so grateful to be a part of. Id love for YOU to join team Studio FITRx too!
The years that followed were extremely challenging both personally and professionally. My professional role/responsibilities continued to grow to an overwhelming degree, my mother passed away suddenly at the young age of 53, I suffered a miscarriage, adrenal fatigue (aka exhaustion) which eventually led to my physical and emotional breakdown. I took a vacation, rested and went right back to work (bad idea).
In 2016, I was blessed with a second healthy baby boy. Shortly thereafter, I suffered a catastrophic back injury followed by a roller coaster of postpartum health issues from physical injuries to both PPA & PPD. It was a very challenging time in my life. I was very overweight and suffering a great deal of physical and emotional pain. I was doing everything in my professional scope to get healthy but nothing was working. My body was screaming at me to PAY ATTENTION. Something needed to change. It was so incredibly isolating and frustrating as someone who was supposed to know how to bounce back but just wasn’t making the progress I was accustomed to. Everything I thought I knew just wasn’t working anymore. I was out of ideas losing hope.
My frustration lead me down the rabbit hole to do a lot more research of women’s health, hormone balance, rehabilitative fitness and evidence based, plant based nutrition. There had to be a better way to get back on track and I was determined to figure that out. No more calorie counting, macro tracking, food obsessing. No more hours of cardio and killing myself at the gym.
With a lot of hard work, support and love from many people in my life, I was able to rebuild my strength and fight my way back to the physically and emotionally healthy woman I once was. I lost over 60 pounds and rediscovered my passion for fitness coaching. This experience inspired me to find a way to help other women out there get the support they needed to have the success they deserved. It was out of the fire and ash that the seeds of FITRx were sown.
In the winter of 2017, my family and I took a leap of faith! We sold our family home in the city and I quit my long term career in the booming Vancouver fitness industry. We moved our family out to the suburbs so I could stay home with my 2 little boys and spend more time as a family. These big moves, although terrifying, were exactly the catalyst I needed to create FITRx.
FITRx started out with just a small (but mighty) group of women who joined me for some cycling classes that eventually led to some ladies only group fitness classes. Once word got out about the amazing results that clients were achieving, FITRx quickly manifested into a Super Squad sisterhood of women from all over the area and abroad.
